You want a specific answer for a specific decision. Here is how God actually tends to guide people — plus what to do when the answer isn't obvious.
Before asking what God wants for a specific decision, it helps to know that most of what God wants for you is not hidden at all — it is already plainly written in Scripture. “This is the will of God, even your sanctification” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Obedience, love, holiness — these are not mysteries to be discovered.
For the specific decisions Scripture does not directly address — which job, which house, which path — here is how God tends to guide people.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally… and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). Guidance is something to actively pursue in prayer, not a message to passively wait for.
“Let the peace of God rule in your hearts… and be ye thankful” (Colossians 3:15). A settled peace after real prayer and thought is meaningful evidence — but it is not infallible proof by itself, and it should be weighed alongside everything else here.
“In the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). People who know you and know Scripture can see blind spots you cannot see in yourself.
Open and closed doors can confirm a direction, but they are not decisive by themselves — they must line up with what Scripture has already made clear before they are trusted.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart… and he shall direct thy paths.”Proverbs 3:5-6
Scripture does not forbid seeking confirmation — Gideon asked for confirming signs (Judges 6). But signs should not replace Scripture and wisdom as the primary guide, and should not be sought as a substitute for making a decision.
Test it against Scripture first. A feeling of peace that contradicts what God has already revealed in his Word is not from him, regardless of how strong or comforting it feels.
God's sovereignty is not threatened by imperfect decisions made in good faith and prayer. He works through them, not only around them (Romans 8:28).
