Not a personality, not a program, not a political cause — Christ Himself is what gets preached, week after week.
Teaching that can be checked against Scripture, not just against what a leader says. “These were more noble... in that they searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11) is praised in the Bible, not discouraged.
Salvation as a gift received by faith, not a status earned by attendance, giving, or behavior. If the message quietly becomes “do enough and you'll be right with God,” that is a warning sign.
Leaders who answer to someone — elders, a board, a denomination — and who welcome honest questions instead of punishing them.
A church that will show you, in plain terms, where the money goes. Pressure to give beyond your means, or promises tied to giving, are serious red flags.
Somewhere you would be missed if you disappeared for a month — not just a seat that gets filled by someone else next week.
