People mix this up in four common ways. Here is the straight answer, and the four mix-ups untangled.
You are saved by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ — not by good works, not by joining a church, and not by simply repeating words. You trust that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and you receive Him as Lord. That decision, honestly made, is what saves you.
Most confusion about salvation comes down to four mix-ups. Here they are, untangled.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). A gift is not earned. If you could work your way to it, it would not be grace anymore.
“The devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19). Even they know the facts are true — and it saves none of them. Saving faith is trust and surrender, the way you would trust a chair to hold you, not just believe chairs generally exist.
“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). The words matter less than what is happening underneath them — an honest turning, not a performance.
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us” (Titus 3:5). Being saved settles your standing with God directly. A healthy church is where you grow afterward — it does not save you, and it never claims to.
