It was founded in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, with three hundred people at the founding convention. Today the Assemblies of God report close to 13,000 churches in the United States and more than 88 million adherents worldwide, which makes it the largest Pentecostal denomination on earth.
What they believe is set out in a Statement of Fundamental Truths in sixteen points, published in full with the Scriptures behind each one. They say plainly that the wording itself is not inspired and is meant as a basis of fellowship, not as a complete account of biblical truth — an unusually honest way to introduce a doctrinal statement.
They state openly that the wording of their Statement of Fundamental Truths “is not inspired nor contended for” and that no claim is made that it covers all biblical truth — only what is needed as a basis of fellowship.
