Convoy of Hope

Convoy of Hope started with a grief. Hal Donaldson’s father was killed in a car crash, and the neighbours who kept the family fed left a mark on him that never wore off. Years later, after meetings with Mother Teresa and with the missionaries Mark and Huldah Buntain, he and a handful of family and friends held the first outreach days in northern California in 1994.

What it does now is mostly two things. It feeds children at school — 677,000 of them, in 39 countries — and it shows up after disasters with food, water and supplies. Around those two run an agriculture programme that trains farmers, a women’s empowerment programme, and community events in American towns.

The published totals since 1994 are large: more than 350 million people helped, 995 million meals served, $3.1 billion worth of food and supplies shared, and 1.2 million volunteers. The books are audited every year by an outside firm, and the ministry is certified by the ECFA.
