Compassion does one thing, and has done it since 1952: one sponsor, one named child, through the child’s own local church. You write letters, they write back, and the money goes to the church that already knows the family.
It costs $43 a month. The child gets the Gospel, health checks and medical care, schooling and tutoring, child-protection training, and emergency help when disaster hits the area. More than 2.3 million children are in the programme, served by over 8,000 partner churches in 29 countries, with Malawi, Myanmar and Zambia named as next.
It began with a preacher, Everett Swanson, who went to South Korea during the war and could not unsee what he found there — orphaned children dying on the streets. He started raising money for rice, and the ministry grew from that.
Sponsorship is a standing monthly commitment, not a one-off gift: $43 a month is about $516 a year, and the point of it is that the child can count on you for years. Work out whether you can hold that before you start. And because Compassion has no office in Poland, ask them in writing how a sponsor living outside their twelve sponsor countries pays, and in what currency, before you sign up.
Compassion has kept the same method for over seventy years — one child, one sponsor, one local church. It is a charter member of the ECFA and holds top transparency ratings.
